Are you looking for better, natural options to care for your hair? Perhaps you’ve realised that many of the conventional shampoos being sold on store shelves are actually destroying your hair and potentially causing long term damage to your health.
Thankfully, there are natural and simple alternatives available!
These 7 wonderful natural ingredients have been tried and tested to have beneficial effects. They can be applied to your hair and scalp in various ways. As leave-in treatments or a scalp massage. They can also be used in your shampoo (which is what we have done with our newly released all-natural shampoo bars).
1. Olive Oil
A few years ago, we met someone with really thick, healthy looking hair. We got into a conversation about his hair and found out that he was previously balding. Then he heard that soap made with Olive Oil could help with hair loss and started using it. After several months of continuous use, his hair started to rejuvenate, and he now has a full head of luscious hair. You would never believe that he was once suffering from severe hair loss!
His first-hand experience really roused our interest and started us on a quest to investigate the benefits of olive oil for hair and to eventually provide an all-natural, olive oil shampoo that would be worthy of The Soap Haven name.
Benefits of Olive Oil for Hair Care
Moisturised Hair that is Softer and More Manageable
Olive Oil is extremely moisturising. It protects hair and makes it more manageable by helping to prevent frizzy, brittle hair and therefore reduce breakage and split ends.
Stronger and Healthier Hair
Olive Oil is rich in antioxidants, Vitamins A and E that help nourish and protect keratin. Our hair is made up of keratin that is lost due to age and damage from the harmful effects of harsh chemicals used in most commercial shampoos such as SLS/SLES.
2. Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is well known as a go-to ingredient for hair treatment in Asia. Here’s why it’s often associated with luscious, healthy, shiny hair.
Coconut Oil is very high in Medium Chain Fatty Acids. These are healthy, beneficial fats that are also found in goat milk and breastmilk, two of the most nourishing things on the planet! These good fatty acids are nourishing and also have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Benefits of Coconut Oil for Hair and Scalp
Strengthens Hair and Prevents Hair Loss
Coconut Oil is able to penetrate and nourish hair cells. This helps promote stronger, healthier hair and helps prevent hair loss.
Due to its antifungal properties, Coconut Oil can help target fungus which is the root cause of dandruff. The effects might take some time compared to over the counter medication for dandruff, but the results are long term as they deal with the root of the problem and not just treat the symptoms (flaking and itchiness). It’s effectiveness can be enhanced in combination with other naturally antifungal ingredients such as Tea Tree Oil which we will talk about below.
3. Castor Oil
Castor Oil is the ultimate hair and scalp care ingredient. It was a well known treatment for hair and skin beauty, till marketing companies made it a forgotten memory through relentless advertising in order to sell us fancy sounding (and fancy priced!) products.
Castor Oil contains many properties that are beneficial to hair and scalp health. It is rich in ricinoleic acid, Vitamin E, Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, and healthy proteins and minirals. Castor Oil is also naturally antibacterial and antifungal.
Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair
Stimulates Hair Growth and Balances pH
Castor Oil is very high in ricinoleic acid which increases blood circulation to the scalp and promotes hair growth. Ricinoleic acid is also known to help balance pH. This helps the scalp to balance natural oil production, which can help undo the damage caused by harsh chemical hair products such as some shampoos and dyes.
Healthier and More Manageable Hair
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that disables the production of free radicals that damage tissue. Its antioxidant properties help protect keratin to promote healthy hair that is stronger, smoother and less frizzy.
Fights Dandruff and Other Scalp Infections
Castor Oil is antibacterial and antifungal. It is therefore useful against scalp infections such as dandruff and folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles caused by bacterial or fungal infection). Symptoms of folliculitis include small red or white bumps that look like acne and/or itchy sores.
4. Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary essential oil is obtained from the Rosemary herb and has many wonderful properties. Rosemary is also rich in the antioxidant Carnosol which reduces inflammation, balances hormone production, lowers cancer risk and improves hair growth. Recent studies have even shown that it supports brain function and helps with neurological and nerve tissue healing.
Benefits of Rosemary for Hair
Clears Clogged Pores for Healthy Hair Growth
According to Natural Living Ideas, Rosemary “tones down the action of sebum glands and clears up clogged pores that cause acne and itchy scalp. Regular use of rosemary oil ensures healthy, strong, non-greasy hair.”
Prevents Premature Baldness
In An in-depth review on the medicinal flora Rosmarinus officinalis (Lamiaceae), the authors stated that Rosemary oil is “rubbed into hair for stimulating the hair bulbs to renewed activity, to prevent premature baldness.”
5. Peppermint Essential Oil
The first thing most people associate with mint is an invigorating scent and tingly sensation. This make it perfect for an invigorating shampoo in the morning or after a long day. In addition, peppermint also has antiseptic qualities, can help balance scalp pH levels and is great for hair and scalp therapy. In fact, peppermint is one of the oldest and most widely used medicinal herbs.
Benefits of Peppermint Oil for Hair
Hair Loss Therapy and Prevention
A study was published in Dec 2014 titled Peppermint Oil Promotes Hair Growth Without Toxic Signs*. The researchers found that peppermint oil worked better than the other essential oils tested and was even better than minoxidil (the drug used many commercial hair treatments with side effects that include rapid weight gain, increased heart rate, eczema, scalp itching and scaling). It induced stronger, thicker and longer hair after 4 weeks.
In conclusion, the researchers stated that Peppermint Oil “facilitates hair growth by promoting the conservation of vascularization of hair dermal papilla, … In addition, Peppermint Oil effectively stimulated hair growth in an animal model via several mechanisms and thus could be used as a therapeutic or preventive alternative medicine for hair loss in humans.”
Regulate Scalp Oil Production
Peppermint oil helps the scalp to balance the production of oil or sebum. Having balanced oil production is important to scalp and hair health. Too little oil can cause the scalp to be dry, itchy and flaky. Too much oil can lead to acne, and clogged pores that impede hair growth.
Antifungal, Antiviral and Antibacterial
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, “In test tubes, peppermint kills some types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, suggesting it may have antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties.”
These properties might help promote scalp health by combating fungal problems such as dandruff and itchiness.
How to Apply Oil Treatment to Hair
There are several way to topically apply these ingredients to you hair. The most common traditional method is to rub the oils on to hair or massage them into your scalp.
For general plant oils such as olive oil and coconut oil, these can be applied directly.
Castor oil is great for hair, but because it is extremely thick and sticky, few people would choose to apply it directly on their hair.
For essential oils such as Rosemary and Peppermint oil, these are very strong and must be diluted by mixing it with a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil. A carrier oil with 3% of an essential oil mixed in has been shown to be effective in studies.
The oil should then be applied and left on for several hours or overnight.
However for all the above methods, your hair and scalp will be covered with oil for the duration of the treatment, which can be rather inconvenient.
